“Power, space, time and a visitor.”

A pale, soft-spoken stranger lands in New Mexico with a case of patents that make him rich and no explanation of where he came from. Thomas Jerome Newton (David Bowie) needs the money to build a way to carry water to his drought-stricken home planet, and he hires the lawyer Oliver Farnsworth (Buck Henry) to run the business. Nicolas Roeg follows him into a small hotel, where Mary-Lou (Candy Clark) takes him in and a slow, tender attachment starts between them.
