The Man Who Laughs

On a winter night in a storm, Ursus (Gérard Depardieu) takes in two orphans, Gwynplaine (Marc-André Grondin) and Déa (Christa Théret), and the three become a family. Years later Gwynplaine is a famous star, and the fame puts pressure on his bond with Déa and with the old man who raised him. Jean-Pierre Améris adapts Victor Hugo's 1869 novel as a period drama about the cost of being seen.
