Occupied Europe, the war still going, and a man in a torn uniform walks out of the woods into a small town. Jan Robin (Jean-Louis Trintignant) says he has just escaped the Nazis and carries news of a dead resistance comrade, and the dead man's family takes him in. Alain Robbe-Grillet lets Jan's account keep changing as he tells it, so that nothing in the house can be trusted.
