Captain Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra) came home from Korea to a hero's welcome, and all he wants is for the nightmares to stop. They keep replaying the same strange scene about his platoon's capture, and the platoon's other story, that Sergeant Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey) saved them all, no longer holds up. John Frankenheimer follows Marco as he digs, with an enemy he cannot yet name and a deadline he cannot see.
