The Marriage of Maria Braun

Maria Braun (Hanna Schygulla) marries the soldier Hermann (Klaus Löwitsch) in the last days of the war, and he is reported missing almost at once. She has her looks and her nerve, and she uses both to get through the hungry years that follow, taking work in a bar and later a place beside the industrialist Karl Oswald (Ivan Desny). Fassbinder keeps her moving through rubble and boardrooms, and her wedding ring never leaves her hand.
