A man named Dimitrios Makropoulos (Zachary Scott) is found dead, washed up on the shore in Istanbul, and a mystery writer becomes curious enough to trace his career across Europe. Jean Negulesco sends him city to city, with Mr. Peters (Sydney Greenstreet) attached to him and keeping his own reasons private. The writer started out only wanting a story, and now he is following a trail that someone else is watching.
