In 1951, Ellen McNulty (Thelma Ritter) shuts up her New Jersey hamburger stand and heads west to surprise her son Val (John Lund) and his new bride, Maggie (Gene Tierney). Maggie takes one look at the visitor at the door and assumes she is the maid hired for their big party, and Ellen goes along with it. Mitchell Leisen puts her in an apron in her son's house, where every day she plays along risks the truth coming out at the worst moment.
