The Mattei Affair

(1972)Directed by Francesco Rosi116 minDrama, History
“On October 27, 1962, a plane crashed in Bascape, Italy, sparking an international intrigue...sabotage...disappearances and murders! These events are all the more bizarre because they are TRUE. The central figure was Enrico Mattei.”

On October 27, 1962, a private plane carrying Enrico Mattei (Gian Maria Volonté) goes down on its way to Milan, and the official ruling is an accident. A liberal journalist (Luigi Squarzina) and others start asking why the man who built Italy's state oil company, ENI, would die that way. Francesco Rosi assembles the film from reconstruction and inquiry, so it plays like a case file being opened.
