In 2002, Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Tahar Rahim) is taken from Mauritania and held at the Guantanamo Bay detention center, with no charges filed against him. Years on, defense attorney Nancy Hollander (Jodie Foster) takes his case, while Lt. Stuart Couch (Benedict Cumberbatch) is assigned to prosecute it. Kevin Macdonald keeps the focus on the letters and conversations between Slahi and Hollander, a trust built across a table and a wall of paperwork.
