The Merchant of Four Seasons
Hans Epp (Hans Hirschmüller) sells fruit from a street cart in 1950s Munich, a job his bourgeois family treats as a disgrace. Rainer Werner Fassbinder watches him drink, lash out at his wife Irmgard (Irm Hermann), and go on selling while his sister Anna (Hanna Schygulla) and the rest of the family look on. When his business finally takes off, it brings him no relief, and the film keeps asking why being a credit to his family only deepens his despair.
