Bassanio (Joseph Fiennes) wants Portia (Lynn Collins), a wealthy heiress, and he cannot afford to court her. His friend Antonio (Jeremy Irons) has his fortune tied up in ships abroad, so the two go to Shylock (Al Pacino), a Jewish moneylender in Venice in 1596. Michael Radford adapts Shakespeare's play as a story about money, and about how differently a Christian and a Jew are treated by the same city.
