The Merry Widow

(1934)Directed by Ernst Lubitsch99 minComedy, Music, Romance
“Let Joy be Unconfined!”

One small kingdom is about to lose its richest citizen, a widow whose fortune holds up the whole national treasury, and the court has one remedy: send a man to win her. Count Danilo (Maurice Chevalier) is dispatched to Paris to court Madame Sonia (Jeanette MacDonald), though Danilo is a man at ease in Maxim's. Ernst Lubitsch stages the Lehár songs and the wit of the dialogue so that each scene moves with the airy lightness of the music itself.
