“Behind every great painting lies an even greater story”

Peter Bruegel (Rutger Hauer) is a painter who watches a crowded landscape the way other men watch weather, and he is composing his 1564 Procession to Calvary. Lech Majewski places the people of the painting inside the picture itself, so that Bruegel sketches the very world the film then lets us walk through. Mary (Charlotte Rampling) stands in that crowd, and Bruegel's eye keeps returning to her.
