Henry Adams (Gregory Peck), a penniless American sailor, walks past a London house at the very moment two rich gentlemen hand him an envelope holding a single note worth one million pounds. Every shopkeeper he offers it to treats him like royalty and gives him whatever he wants for free. Ronald Neame, adapting Mark Twain's story, keeps the comedy light and brisk, letting Peck's easy charm do most of the work.
