A teenage girl is taken from a ranch in 1885 New Mexico Territory, and the men who took her are Apache rebels. Her mother, Maggie Gilkeson (Cate Blanchett), has no choice but to ride out with her estranged father, Samuel (Tommy Lee Jones), a man she has not forgiven. Ron Howard sets them on the trail with Lilly's younger sister Dot (Jenna Boyd) beside them, and every day they lose is a day closer to the border.
