The Mission

“One will trust in the power of prayer. One will believe in the might of the sword.”

A Jesuit priest walks into the South American wilderness, past the waterfall where an earlier missionary was killed, to build a mission among the Indians of the region. Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) is soon joined by Rodrigo Mendoza (Robert De Niro), a slave hunter who has been converted and wants to stay. Roland Joffé shoots the jungle and the falls on a grand scale, then sets the small mission against them.
