In Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, in 1876, Irish coal miners bound by a sacred oath sabotage the company's mining facilities to force better conditions for their families. Detective James McKenna (Richard Harris) goes undercover in the community to expose the secret society, and he gets close to its leader, Jack Kehoe (Sean Connery). Martin Ritt sets one man's friendship against his assignment, and the two men have to live with that.
