“The Most Exciting Picture!”

Freya Roth (Margaret Sullavan) lives in a small village in the German Alps with her father, Professor Victor Roth (Frank Morgan), in the early 1930s. Her days are full of family dinners and the young men who gather around her, among them Fritz Marberg (Robert Young) and Martin Breitner (James Stewart). Frank Borzage follows what happens once the Nazis take power, and Freya's bond with Martin becomes the one thing the village can't sort into sides.
