Bob Rainsford (Joel McCrea) is a celebrated big-game hunter, and he is the only man who can say he was lucky when his ship breaks apart on the reefs. He washes up on an island ruled by Count Zaroff (Leslie Banks), a gracious, eccentric host who shares his home with two other survivors, Eve (Fay Wray) and her brother Martin. Schoedsack and Pichel turn a dinner among strangers into a plain argument about whether the hunter and the hunted are really different things.
