A young researcher on a British expedition in Egypt reads aloud from an ancient scroll, and the mummy of the priest Imhotep (Boris Karloff) stirs back to life. Karl Freund follows him out of the dig site as he searches for the reincarnation of his lost love, Anck-es-en-Amon, whom Helen Grosvenor (Zita Johann) may carry in her. Imhotep waited centuries for her, and he has no way of loving anyone else.
