The Murderers Are Among Us

Susanne Wallner (Hildegard Knef) comes home to bombed-out Berlin after the camps and finds a stranger already living in her apartment. He is Hans Mertens (Wilhelm Borchert), an ex-soldier who drinks hard and cannot sleep, and neither of them has anywhere else to go. Wolfgang Staudte made this in 1946, among the ruins, about a country that still had to look at what it had done.
