“There's big trouble happening in River City, Iowa.”

A stranger steps off the train in River City, Iowa, in the 1910s, with a story about a boys' band and no instruments to show for it. Harold Hill (Matthew Broderick) has done this in town after town, collecting money for uniforms and horns he never means to deliver. Jeff Bleckner's film sets him against Marian Paroo (Kristin Chenoweth), the town librarian, and his money is only worth anything if he leaves before anyone looks too closely.
