The Naked Island
Toyo (Nobuko Otowa) and Senta (Taiji Tonoyama) live with their two sons, Taro (Shinji Tanaka) and Jiro (Masanori Horimoto), as the only people on a small island. Kaneto Shindō films their days in black and white with almost no spoken dialogue, and the work of irrigating the crops fills nearly every hour. The film puts that labor in front of you plainly and asks nothing more of it than to be seen.
