Phil Regal (Anthony Quinn) is a New York mobster who wants his pregnant sister Rosalie (Anne Bancroft) married, and the man she loves, Nicky Bradna (Farley Granger), is sitting on death row for murder. To free him, Regal leans on witnesses and pays off a store clerk. Maxwell Shane starts with that arrangement in place, and Rosalie, Nicky and Regal all have more to lose than they know.
