In the 1930s, a last-place baseball team gets an unlikely lifeline when Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) shows up, middle-aged and unannounced, with a bat and a past he won't explain. Barry Levinson follows him through the dugout, where manager Pop Fisher (Wilford Brimley) and the sportswriter Max Mercy (Robert Duvall) size him up.
