“From "The Emigrants" dream, come the settlers struggle to survive...”

Karl Oskar (Max von Sydow) is a Swedish farmer from Småland who has crossed the ocean with his wife Kristina (Liv Ullmann) to start over in Minnesota. Jan Troell follows the family through the second half of the 19th century, as the Civil War, a native uprising and the pull of California gold reach their frontier land. Karl Oskar clears the ground, and Kristina keeps the household together beside him.
