Preacher Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum) wants the $10,000 their late father hid, and he will charm a widow, Willa Harper (Shelley Winters), to get close to the two children who know where it is. Charles Laughton sets John (Billy Chapin) and Pearl (Sally Jane Bruce) against him in Depression-era West Virginia. Beneath the hymns and the borrowed scripture sits an old fear: the people who sound most righteous are not always safe to trust.
