Rachel Schpitendavel (Britt Ekland) steps off a train in New York from her Amish community, determined to dance, and lands at Billy Minsky's Burlesque. Raymond Paine (Jason Robards), the show's comedian, sees a way to outwit the local reformers by billing her as a Paris sensation named "Mme Fifi." William Friedkin crowds the stage with the troupe while Raymond and his straight man Chick (Norman Wisdom) both fall for her, each hoping she will pick him.
