“Locked in the cold asylum of his mind – a sane man stalks his prey...”

Locked in an asylum, the farmer Salem (Max von Sydow) has somehow gotten out, and the people who put him there are the ones he is heading for. They include his sister Ester Jenks (Liv Ullmann) and her husband, Dr. Anton Jenks (Per Oscarsson), while Inspector (Trevor Howard) tries to understand how the escape was possible. László Benedek, working in Copenhagen studios in 1970, lets the Swedish winter and the film's grainy stock do the frightening.
