“Every book has a life of its own.”

In the late 1990s, Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) makes his living tracking down rare books for private collectors. The wealthy Boris Balkan (Frank Langella) hires him to compare the last two copies of The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows, a 17th-century text said to summon the Devil. Roman Polanski sends him across Europe, where the people who owned these books keep turning up dead.
