The Notebook

“Behind every great love is a great story.”

An old man (James Garner) sits down each day with a woman in a nursing home (Gena Rowlands) and reads to her from a worn notebook. The story is of Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) and Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams), who fall in love in the 1940s and are separated by the war, then meet again seven years later on different paths. Nick Cassavetes frames it so the reading is the thing at stake, since she has Alzheimer's and the pages are how he reaches her.
