Jim Ackland (John Mills) is still recovering from a head injury from a bus crash when a girl he has just met is found dead on the local common. He has no alibi for the hours she was killed, and the police turn to him first. Roy Ward Baker follows the suspicion as it settles on Jim, and on Jenny Carden (Joan Greenwood), the one person who stays close to him while he starts to doubt himself.
