The Old Maid

(1939)Directed by Edmund Goulding95 minDrama
“Vividly, unforgettably, a woman's love starved soul is revealed. All those strange secrets she locks in her heart ... moments of rapture and of heartbreak ... longings that no man can fathom. Of these has the year's finest picture been woven!”

Charlotte Lovell (Bette Davis) and her cousin Delia (Miriam Hopkins) belong to the same family, but their lives pull in different directions. The return of Clem Spender (George Brent), an old flame, and the arrival of a child nobody can openly acknowledge complicate everything between them. Edmund Goulding builds the film on a secret that Charlotte has to guard, and the more she protects it, the more it threatens to cost her.
