The Only Son
Tsune Nonomiya (Chōko Iida) is a widow in the countryside who spins silk to pay for one thing: her son Ryosuke (Shinichi Himori) getting a proper education in Tokyo. Years later she travels to the city to see how he has done, and finds him teaching at a night school, struggling to support a wife and a young son. Yasujirō Ozu, in his first feature with sound, lets the quiet in the rooms do the talking.
