“Mirror, mirror, on the wall, now who's the fairest twin of all?”

In 1940s Mexico, Magdalena Méndez (Dolores del Río) works as a manicurist, poor and overlooked, while her twin sister María lives in wealth and ease. Magdalena begins to plan a switch that would put her in her sister's place. Roberto Gavaldón directs the story as a slow tightening, following Dolores del Río through both women's lives.
