The lead actor of J.J. "Jake" Hannaford's unfinished film has vanished, and the questions about where he went follow the director through his own seventieth birthday party. Orson Welles fills the night with guests, cameras and a screening of the footage, while Hannaford (John Huston) fends off a crowd that wants a piece of him. Brooks Otterlake (Peter Bogdanovich), the younger director he once mentored, is among those watching him closely.
