András (András Szabó) is a gifted violinist who wants to be left alone with his music and his drink. Kata (Jolan Fodor), his wife, is the one who has to live around what that costs. Béla Tarr's first feature follows a marriage coming apart in small, ordinary ways, because a talent that asks everything of one person gives nothing back to the people nearest him.
