“Sometimes the greatest journey is the distance between two people.”

Kitty Fane (Naomi Watts) wants to be loved, and she has married a doctor, Walter Fane (Edward Norton), who cannot give her that. When her affair with Charlie Townsend (Liev Schreiber) comes to light, Walter takes her to a Chinese village where cholera is killing people, and neither of them can easily leave. John Curran films the marriage and the epidemic side by side, giving both the same patient attention.
