James T. Hart (Timothy Bottoms) walks into his first-year contracts class at Harvard Law and is called on by Professor Charles W. Kingsfield Jr. (John Houseman), who questions students in front of the whole room. James Bridges follows Hart through the study groups and an affair with Susan Fields (Lindsay Wagner), who happens to be Kingsfield's daughter. Hart has one goal for the year, to win the approval of a man who gives nobody any.
