The Parson's Widow

The village has handed its pulpit to young Sofren Ivarson (Einar Röd), and with it an old custom: he must marry the widow of the parson before him, Dame Margarete (Hildur Carlberg). She is old enough to be his grandmother, and he already has a wife, Mari (Greta Almroth), waiting for him. Carl Theodor Dreyer plays the three of them against each other in one small house, where Sofren and Mari begin to see the widow's age as a nuisance they might outlast.
