The Party and the Guests

(1966)Directed by Jan Němec70 minDrama, Comedy
“Maybe one day the Czechs will see this picture again.”

A group of well-dressed friends walk through the woods toward a prominent man's birthday party, stopping on the way for a picnic. Then strangers surround them, and Jan Němec has Rudolf (Jan Klusák) and the others treated with a politeness that gives them no way to object. Banned in Czechoslovakia for twenty years as an allegory of socialist rule, it shows how easily people accept the rules of whoever is holding the door.
