Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a widowed farmer in South Carolina, has put the French and Indian War behind him and wants only his land and his children. Then his eldest son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) enlists to fight the British, and Benjamin goes back to the soldier he swore he'd never be again. Roland Emmerich sets the war against the ruthless Colonel Tavington (Jason Isaacs), and Benjamin carries every battle as a father first.
