Stanley Belt (Jerry Lewis) is a bellhop with no talent for anything, and he wants only to do his job and be left alone. Then the team behind a recently deceased entertainer picks him as the man to take over the act, and they set about training him to sing and dance before an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Lewis directs himself as a man who never stops trying, though his handlers begin to suspect he has nothing to work with.
