Each day Sol Nazerman (Rod Steiger) opens his pawnshop in Harlem, takes in the radios and watches people haggle over what their things are worth, and gives them nothing back. Sidney Lumet lets flashes of the camps break into the grey routine without warning. His assistant Jesus Ortiz (Jaime Sánchez) keeps reaching toward him, and Sol keeps him at arm's length.
