Charlie (Logan Lerman) starts his freshman year in Pittsburgh in 1991 wanting only to get through it, a quiet kid who writes his thoughts down in letters to an unnamed friend. Two seniors, Sam (Emma Watson) and her stepbrother Patrick (Ezra Miller), pull him out of the sidelines and into their circle of music and friends. Stephen Chbosky, adapting his own novel, keeps the camera close to Charlie and lets us see the world the way he does.
