Nothing is waiting for Gabby (Bette Davis) at the Arizona roadside diner where she serves, and she dreams of a bigger life somewhere else. Then Alan Squier (Leslie Howard), a penniless drifter, wanders in, and Archie Mayo has Duke Mantee (Humphrey Bogart), a notorious killer, follow close behind to hold everyone at the counter. Miles of desert surround the diner, and between Gabby and Alan a rapport has already started.
