The Phantom Carriage

“Do the Dead Come Back? Can Your Soul Leave Your Body...And Return Again?”

David Holm (Victor Sjöström) is a drunk and a bully, and on New Year's Eve he lies among his fellow drinkers while his wife (Hilda Borgström) waits at home. An old legend says the last person to die before midnight must drive Death's carriage for the whole year, collecting souls without rest. Sjöström, who also directed, fills the film with ghostly double exposures, so the dead drift through the frame like smoke.
