The Phantom of Liberty

The film begins in 19th-century Spain and moves forward, one chance encounter at a time, into the 1970s. Luis Buñuel hands the story from character to character, among them Mr. Foucault (Jean-Claude Brialy), a Lady in Black (Adriana Asti), and a Nurse (Milena Vukotić), with no single protagonist to follow. Each person is handed to the next in a new situation, and no one stays long enough to learn where they are going.
