John Patterson (Richard Kiley) comes home to Phenix City, Alabama, wanting to clean up a town where gambling and prostitution run openly and the law looks the other way. His father Albert (John McIntire), a lawyer, wants no part of the fight at first. Phil Karlson stages the story in the manner of a newsreel, and the film turns on whether a cautious father will stand beside his son.
