“A journey out of darkness into light”

In 1021, a boy in a miserable English mining town watches his mother die of side sickness and swears he will become a physician. Rob Cole (Tom Payne) learns what he can from a traveling Barber (Stellan Skarsgård), then sets out across the world to reach Isfahan, in Persia, where the healer Ibn Sina (Ben Kingsley) teaches. Philipp Stölzl films the long road east as a series of hard crossings, each one costing Rob years and the people he leaves behind.
